NOIA celebrates 20 years of preserving Italian culture, history in Northeast Ohio

T he Northern Ohio Italian American Foundation (NOIA) celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The group, made up of inluential, dedicated and successful Italian-American men and women, works to preserve its Italian culture and honor its history. NOIA’s roots took hold in 1995 with a charitable mission: to support religious and educational institutions as well as community organizations that embody and advance Italian-American culture and ideals. The nonproit organization grew after several prominent business leaders in Cleveland met to discuss how to honor their Italian-American heritage, culture and traditions.

Twenty years later, NOIA boasts more than 200 members and has raised more than $3 million for charity. Contributions of $1 million or more have gone to restore the sacristy of St. John’s Cathedral in Cleveland. Other benefactors include the Cleveland Italian Cultural Gardens, Cleveland Museum of Art, the Opera Per Tutti, Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts as well as four local parishes: St. Rocco, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Holy Redeemer and Holy Rosary churches. With community leaders such as Umberto Fedeli, president and CEO of The Fedeli Group, Vince Campanella, former Cuyahoga County commissioner and John Quagliata, Cleveland restaurateur,

NOIA has tremendous support within the Cleveland community. “I joined NOIA in order to help preserve the memories of my ancestors who were instrumental in creating the Italian-American culture,” Campanella says. “The galas, particularly in the early years, were my best memories. I think the best change NOIA has made over the past 20 years has been the emergence of the next generation who are showing signs of bright leadership.” NOIA’s 2015 Annual Gala will take place Nov. 21 at the Cleveland Museum of Art. At this year’s event, NOIA will announce three grants totaling $500,000, which commemorates its past two decades of philanthropic leadership. ●
